On April 20, 2010, B.P.’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, caused by a well blowout that killed 11 crewmembers and ignited a massive fireball visible from more than 35 miles away. 2018 marks eight years since the Deepwater Horizon disaster resulted in an oil gusher that flowed for 87 days and discharged 4.9 million barrels (or 210 million gallons) of oil into Gulf waters.
On 23 April 2018 the Amadiba Crisis Committee, represented by their lawyers Richard Spoor Inc. and the Legal Resources Centre, is taking the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to court over attempts to mine their land in Xolobeni on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape. The applicants will request the court to rule that the DMR cannot issue a mining license without the community’s consent.
