On September 11-12, join Voices for National Service for Capitol Hill Day 2018 in Washington, D.C.
Capitol Hill Day – sponsored by CSX – is our chance to make sure that Congress knows the value of national service and the impact these programs are having in their states and districts.
Your on-the-ground perspective is invaluable to lawmakers and their staff. They want to know how federal programs work and you can put a human face on national service.
Registration is free and includes training, materials and a kick-off reception on Tuesday, September 11 from 5:30-7:30PM at the Hilton Crystal City in Arlington, VA. Visits to congressional offices will be on Wednesday, September 12 from 8:30AM-1:00PM. For those attending the AmeriCorps State and National Symposium, congressional visits will conclude in the early afternoon so participants can attend the symposium’s opening plenary at 2:00PM.
No experience is necessary to participate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Capitol Hill Day important?
When our nation’s leaders don’t understand the impact national service programs are having in communities, these programs are left vulnerable to budget cuts and proposals to eliminate national service. To ensure continued and increased funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, we must work together to educate members of Congress about the important work CNCS-supported programs are doing in their states and districts.
When and where is Capitol Hill Day?
To facilitate maximum participation, Voices for National Service is scheduled concurrently with the AmeriCorps State and National Symposium in Arlington, VA.
We will host a Kick-Off Reception on Tuesday, September 11 at the symposium hotel, the Hilton Crystal City from 5:30-7:30PM. We highly encourage all participants to book travel and arrive in Washington, DC on September 11. Final Hill Day schedules and materials will be distributed at the Kick-Off Reception and this networking event provides an excellent opportunity for you to meet and prepare with the other members of your state team.
All visits to congressional offices will occur on Wednesday, September 12 from 8:30AM-1:00PM. For those attending the AmeriCorps State and National Symposium, congressional visits will conclude in the early afternoon on September 12, so participants can attend the symposium’s opening plenary at 2:00PM.
Do I need experience to participate in Capitol Hill Day?
No. Voices for National Service will provide a web-based training and briefing materials in advance of your arrival in Washington, DC.
How will you be organizing participants?
Every Capitol Hill Day participant will be assigned to a single state team, so congressional leaders can hear directly from individuals affiliated with national service programs operating in the state they represent. When you register, please list the top 1-3 states where your program serves.
My colleague wants to attend Capitol Hill Day. Can I add my colleague to my registration?
We require that every participant complete their own registration. If you want to attend meetings with another person, please note that special request in your registration and we will assign you to the same state team.
Do I need to schedule my own meetings?
Please do not seek a meeting with your member of Congress on your own. The Voices for National Service team will be scheduling all Hill Day visits and will be coordinating with congressional offices directly.
What if I’m only available for a part of the 4 hour block of time set aside for Capitol Hill Day?
We request that you only register for Capitol Hill Day if you are able to commit to participate in congressional meetings from 8:30AM-1:00PM on September 12.
Who do I contact with questions or if my availability on September 12th changes?
You can reach us at email@example.com or (202) 742-7386. If you schedule changes at any time after registering, please notify us immediately.
I work for an AmeriCorps or Senior Corps program. May I participate?
Yes, you can participate. But please make sure both time and resources spent on Capitol Hill Day are disassociated from your federal grant.
Disclaimer on Political Activity — As we speak for national service and volunteering, we must be mindful of how critically important it is to keep all political and advocacy activities completely separate from federal grant activities. Furthermore, service has always had bipartisan support. That’s why we must be vigilant in maintaining our focus on educating and informing our representatives about our work and impact in a non-partisan and respectful manner, at all times. If your organization receives federal funds, you are allowed to participate in Voices for National Service meetings, call days, events, activities, and sign-on letters. But it is absolutely critical that organizations who receive federal funds keep any political and advocacy activities completely disassociated with their federal grant activities. Please do not make calls while on grant-time or using technology funded by your organization’s federal grant. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) rules are clear on this issue, as are the general rules that apply to all grantees of the federal government. We must be scrupulous in conforming with these rules, and we hope you will review this letter from CNCS that explains the restrictions on legislative lobbying and partisan politics.
